PortLocals is careful with personal data. We only collect what is needed to run the website and prevent abuse. We sell nothing and share nothing with advertisers.

Who we are

PortLocals (formerly IJmuidenEnzo.nl) is a private website about ports and shipping. For privacy questions you can email: [email protected]

If you only browse the site

  • We use no analytics or tracking cookies, no Google Analytics and no advertising networks.
  • Like every web server, our server keeps technical log files (IP address, requested page, time and browser). We only use them for security and troubleshooting. They are deleted automatically after a few months.
  • The site runs through Cloudflare, which provides speed and protection against attacks. To do so Cloudflare processes technical data about your connection, including an approximate location based on your IP address.

Port near you

On the homepage we ask whether you want to go to the port near you. Only if you choose to and your browser gives permission do we send your rounded location to our server once to calculate the nearest port. We do not store that location. Without permission we make a suggestion based on the approximate location of your IP address.

If you comment as a guest

We store the name you enter, your comment, the time and an encrypted code of your IP address. Your IP address cannot be recovered from that code; we only use it to fight spam and abuse (for example the maximum number of comments per quarter of an hour). Your comment only becomes visible after review. Rejected comments and spam are deleted.

If you are a member

For members we store:

  • your username (shown with your comments and photos);
  • your password, only in encrypted form (nobody can see it, not even us);
  • your email address. It is never shown and only used to contact you about your account or submissions;
  • the title you choose (for example photographer or crew) and, if you share them, the ships you sailed on with your role, years and story. These are publicly visible with your username; you can change or delete them at any time;
  • an encrypted IP code from the moment you signed up, the date of your last login, your comments and your submitted photos.

Submitted photos

You only submit photos you took yourself. By submitting, you give PortLocals permission to show the photo on this website, with your username as photographer. The photo remains yours. If you want a published photo removed, email us.

Cookies and local storage

  • A session cookie when you log in or use a form. It keeps you logged in and protects forms against abuse, and disappears when you close your browser.
  • A preference cookie with your chosen language and the last port you viewed, so the menu is right. It is kept for up to one year.
  • If you tick “Stay logged in” when logging in: a cookie with a random code that keeps you logged in on that device. It expires after 90 days without use and is deleted when you log out.
  • In your browser’s storage we remember whether you answered the location question and which port you chose. This never leaves your device.

These are all functional features that do not require consent; that is why you see no cookie banner.

Protection against bots

To keep out spam, your browser solves a small calculation puzzle when you submit a form. No data about you is collected or sent to third parties for this.

How long do we keep data?

  • Data for spam protection (IP codes for actions): at most 2 days.
  • Published comments: as long as they are on the site.
  • Member data: until you delete your account.

Your rights

You can always ask which data we hold about you, and have it corrected or deleted. As a member you can also delete your account yourself via My account; your comments will then be deleted as well. If you disagree with how we handle your data, you can file a complaint with the Dutch Data Protection Authority (Autoriteit Persoonsgegevens).
